Within Our Gates 1920
fascinating early melodrama with some non-linear plotting and striking use of cross-cutting in the harrowing third act (I read in other reviews that this is a sort of response to Birth of a Nation, which makes a lot of sense, but I haven't seen that film myself)

Welcome Back, Mr. McDonald 1997
who knew a film about live radio could be this thrilling? you can tell Kōki Mitani has a theatre background with his long lingering shots and the fact that the entirety of this film takes place in a single building (and a truck), with most scenes in a single room, and yet it completely works
incredible to see how a relatively minor change at the start butterfly-effects into the hurricane that is the third act
highly recommend, you can even catch it on youtube with English subs (edit: the video was copyright striked alas)
