Mickey 17 2025
Hugely entertaining, save for the ponderous opening 25 minutes or so. After that, it becomes one of those excellent movies where characters shoot off in different directions like fireworks, to do potentially disastrous things in different places, and we're left to imagine what those things could be given we can only follow one or two characters at a time. Loses at least half a point for its checklist of progressive touch point ideas and images, most of which are tired and nonsensical.

Masterfully, calculatingly crafted despite its apt and powerful assertion that free-flowing emotion rather than exacting precision is how God speaks through art. A film whose every beat and cut is effective. The only issue is how significantly our attention shifts from Salieri to Mozart in the second half, almost leaving the former behind. It has an excellent but truly disturbing final 60 seconds -- one of the great movie endings.

I appreciate the intention of exhibiting white low-class society, but this feels like a simplistic direct cinema documentary. Many scenes feel very authentic, but the whole thing was aiming at stylistic mediocrity.
