I can’t separate the nostalgia out, but I can at least acknowledge its issues. Namely, for a movie so focused on elevating the voices of the oppressed, it’s quite odd (and insulting) that none of the women characters have much to say (or do), other than be pined over (or saved) by a man. Rogue/Logan dynamic is icky and doesn’t hold up. Racial politics were something even the older comic books weren’t afraid to dive into, and yet here there…

A Complete Unknown 2024
Instead of relying on tired biopic tropes or trying to over-explain a sanitized, fake version of Bob Dylan, A Complete Unknown succeeds by taking a minimalist but soulful approach (not dissimilar from Bob Dylan’s music itself).

Deadpool & Wolverine 2024
As someone who grew up on early 2000’s superhero movies, I feel very pandered to. But it kinda works? Multiverse marvel bullshit aside, this one was fun because of the comedic chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. None of the earnest moments land for me (when everything is a fourth wall wink, how am I supposed to take any of it seriously?), but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t laugh or enjoy some of the fun cameos. A $5 Tuesday movie for sure.

The Blazing World 2021
Carlson Young is an artist to watch out for! This film was mesmerizing. She’s clearly influenced by Lynch, Kubrick, and Del Toro, but her voice is also completely her own. Brilliant use of color and music. It’s an emotional and beautiful experience, and it shouldn’t be missed!
