Libby, who is purportedly not that into movies, has seen lots of sci-fi deep cuts like this one. Apparently, Primer is peak independent cinema for her. And while I was impressed with this movie on a conceptual level, it’s hard for me to get excited about it on a cinematic level because my lizard brain wants movie-watching to be on the more passive end of the cognitive spectrum. This one is heavy on theory and fairly light on character development, emotion, imagery,…
This one didn't really work for me as a kid but after years of being Awesome Show-pilled I find myself connecting with this incredibly dumb brand of humor. The comedy serves nothing and still works well due to Martin Short and Charles Grodin's commitment to the bit. I'm glad that 'Clifford' exists and lament that the big studios aren't taking chances on stupid shit like this anymore.
Emotionally rich, morally ambiguous, both conventionally and unconventionally sexy. Breillat builds a playful, irresistible tension between the characters that abruptly comes to a head and descends into what I can only describe as post-nut existential dread.
Breillat includes a lot of sex in this movie but seems to focus on the basic human emotion underlying the act rather than any over-choreographed 50 Shades of Grey softcore-lite artifice. I almost get the sense Breillat was more interested in getting the breathing/moaning right in…
So much fun!
For some reason I thought this one was critically lampooned but I guess I was wrong, as people seem to really like it on Letterboxd. I’ll always remember this as the cool older kids’ horror movie that aired closer to midnight on Halloween night (the candy sorting hour), on TNT or some other big network. Really glad to revisit it now.
Not only does it work on the surface level as a slasher, but also as a commentary…
