interesting concept which looks at the Munich 1972 events through the media ethics angle — its most captivating moments are when these ethics are put under a microscope. what’s the responsibility of the news?
i thought the performances were great, and the story hit all the right emotional notes, but they weren’t given much to work with. the ABC characters aren’t given any background from which the audience can really care about them. they’re kind of built shallow.

just a perfect short doc. the film felt delicate but strong in a strangely symbolic way, showcasing one of the most beautiful doc subject relationships i’ve ever seen in only 17 minutes. i look forward to happily consuming anything sean wang puts out for the rest of his career, and i intend on doing so.

The Zone of Interest 2023
You cannot wrap a slice of life film featuring a surface-level, half-baked, romanticized version of a family of Nazis up in the pretty bow of “art cinema” and expect that sitting with them for almost two hours will bring something new to the genre of Holocaust films, or create an emotionally provocative piece of work that asks questions with more depth than “Why didn’t the Nazis do anything to stop this?” Shame.
The hype was there: A24 production, five Oscars…
