"We span time together as a couple; cuz we're a loving couple, spanning time. These photos are us in love, spanning time. No bullshit faces - no funny faces, just look like you like me... that's all I want; just look like you like me."

Billy Brown, or Vincent Gallo, tells himself, and us, as he orchestrates the ghost on his lap; sure, we see Layla listen, but she's not really there - not really. The photo booth opens fire,…

This is just one of those incredibly beautiful late-career collaborations. Ethan Hawke under direction of Paul Schrader was never something I thought I needed. Trust this odd combination to create, perhaps, one of the most modern and relevant tragedies in years.

Ethan bodies this joint. My mans, who has been my favourite actor since seeing him in Before Sunrise, is reaching new heights; his drive is evident. The core thematic search is there in Ethan, for every frame throughout.

It takes this film from "great" to "affecting".

"I watch a lot of stuff that I actually think is very handsomely mounted and really well made, but it’s not, like, really about anything, at all. It’s about, like, a break-up, you know? I’m like I don’t give a fuck. I don’t give a fuck about who – like what? — like, this is crazy! You got 250 people together, and you made a movie, and it’s about, like, that?"

Brady Corbet at the post-movie TIFF Q&A.

Donnie Darko for the social media age.
The Long Goodbye for YouTube Rabbit Holes.

Brooding, neon, paranoid, dirty, suspicious, alluring. There are moments in the film that feel straight out of a bad mushrooms trip. There are moments of genuine terror. Where the next clue sends him, however, is always the most exciting fear of all.

I wonder why people dislike this with such a seemingly-boiling passion?

Hollywood. The Glitz. The Glamour. Gorgeous glimmers of light surrounded by enveloping shadows.
The question is: how will you justify it all when it becomes too much?

My mother has worshipped the late Princess Diana for as long as I can remember, and as a child, I always trivially thought when she made comparisons to herself, that they were simply rooted in the fact she shared a physical resemblance, but mostly because they share the same name. The way that I would compare myself to LUKE Skywalker; a bit of fun role-play.

Over the years, my mother has helped me re-shape our very personal history into a…
