We all have bad days, things we wish we could do again, regrets. That is the core of most time travel media, especially Japanese media. While this film most certainly adheres to those tropes and themes, it also ellaborates on those themes further. It's not just about learning to let go of the past, it's also about moving forward. Time waits for no one, so we too can't wait by looking back at the past.
A beautiful work depicting the trauma and pain caused by fascist dictatorship. Yet, it also seeks to illustrate how our joy, how our memories of joy and those who we have lost, are the very thing that stands against these evils. It is only through acknowledging the evils of the past that we can ensure we do not repeat them. That comes through the acknowledgment of atrocity, but it also comes by remembering those who stood tall in the face of evil.
An absolutely disgusting attempt at a depiction of transness, Emilia Perez leans and falls into its own stereotypes and misunderstandings of the trans experience in this disjointed mess. On top of that, it continues the harmful depiction of Mexican life by foreigners as a country characterized by the cartel. The fact that this film is one of the most nominated films in Oscar history should tell you all you need to know about the state of the academy.
