An absolute perverse joint through the mind of a deeply sick individual. I Stand Alone really excels at portraying the mindset of one of the most deranged protagonists I have even seen, albeit in a surprisingly sympathetic way. The often self-contradictory thoughts of the unnamed butcher really creates a element of instability through the films, like a pendulum swinging from self-pity to wanton violence and cruelty. It’s hard to know where to begin with Phenomena, it almost feels like three separate films were violently blended together in some unholy union. However, the result is mind-boggling as a first watch. Insect-communicating telepaths, a murderer stalking an all-girls academy, and a chimpanzee wielding a switchblade are only a few of the most memorable moments of the film.
