Mission: Impossible III 2006
this movie can't quite decide whether it's trying to be serious and gritty or lowkey a buddy cop type comedy and that is why it fucking slaps. this ethan is the kind of ethan you can believe in and to me doesn't rely (in the way the later films do) on the Power of Tom Cruise Doing Cool Stunts And Looking Stoic to make you gloss over how much more tinny he becomes as a character. like. there's just something intangible about him in this movie that the following ones don't have and it's a shame

the first best part of this movie is ethan dreaming about lane saying "you should have killed me, ethan" and then lane saying that in real life in the middle of paris and ethan looking like someone just hit him in the stomach. and for a second you as the audience member wonder if you're supposed to be questioning if any of this is real and then you realize no it's worse it's more about how well ethan knows lane…
