    Flawed but fun!
    Excellent blocking, dialogue and performances.

The socially acceptable racism in this movie makes it too hard to enjoy. Here’s just one example: the black for-hire maid (Hattie McDaniel) falls down the stairs and the response is “that’s too bad” “did she break any of our things?”
    Katherine is lovely as usual.
    Mom is annoying af.
The story jumps ahead into the future frequently and makes it feel like a lot was left out. Kind of kills the emotional progression.
Generally just a painful plot, of working so hard to be someone you’re not so people will like you, when they already do. It’s tedious and sad.

    Masterpiece.

I haven’t seen this in years. What really struck me was how much more was going on in Daniel. Particularly with his son. There were so many more moments of tenderness that I had never noticed.
His motivations felt so much clearer to me than I had noticed before.
His desire for a companion was clearer to me.
It’s easy to write-off Daniel in his relentless conquering, but I saw a lot more dimension this time. I saw some…

    Kate is wonderful, as always.
This felt too much like a BBC made for TV miniseries too often.
The score was so distracting and just overdone. It never let the film have a sense of rawness even though the subject matter served it.
Casting choices were awkward and distracting.
The story is fascinating and important and definitely should be told. I’m glad it was made, I just wish it was able to pull it off better.
    But Kate was great!
