I didn't love this which is unfortunate.
As an homage it didn't feel like it had much of an identity of it's own. It pulled some of the best hits and tropes of the genre, but didn't do much with them.
Heard this described as a knock off Dead Poets Society... they weren't wrong.
I've been seeing clips of this on tik tok and youtube shorts for years now and finally decided to give the full movie and watch. It was fine.
Julia Roberts is a good actress, however she's supposed to represent the catalyst of change in these girls lives and it just doesn't feel entirely earned. She's a woman post war who refuses to slip back into the lot…
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Probably the best movie musical that I've watched. Bob Fosse was a master for a reason and it makes sense why this movie felt so personal. It wasn't a referendum, but an acknowledgement of his own life.
It's the what you do between moments of "genius", those moments when what you're creating just clicks and you and everyone around you just gets it. But, it's the what's in between those moments, when those gaps are a little longer than expected…
This is one of those movies that scratches my brain in all the right ways. The perfect mix of wholesome and Melodrama. I won’t lie, I was able to guess what exactly what was going to happen as the movie went on, but that’s what movies like this are meant to do.
They pull you in with the familiar and it’s entirely up to the actors and the cinematography to sell a story that’s been told dozens of times. This accomplished that times over.
I smiled the entire time.
