Kubrick’s treatment of Shelley Duvall is what demystified him for me. One is no longer directing when they choose to abuse a person to the point of breaking down instead of communicating what the scene needs. That is the opposite of directing. Artistic genius doesn’t excuse malpractice. She was already struggling with poor mental health before the production, but she hasn’t been able to recover from the damage since.
