  This one is a head-scratcher. It starts off feeling like a hybrid spoof of high-school dramas and slasher films. And so I spent an hour and a half waiting for the biting commentary, waiting for the punchline. About halfway through, when neither was in sight, I started to realize Deadly Detention was actually trying to take its characters and subject matter seriously. At one point, a character delivers a heartfelt, motivational speech to another character, and it's so poorly written…

  OK, how the hell was Bohemian Rhapsody nominated for a Best Picture Oscar?! Other than Rami Malek’s performance and Queen’s music, that movie has nothing going for it. Just an uninspired, by-the-numbers biopic. Harmless, sure. Fun, at times. Insightful, hardly.

  Too much Freddie to be a Queen movie, and too much Queen to be a Freddie movie. So we get a disappointing, unfocused story that doesn’t give us enough of anything we want.
