Thank goodness for the beautiful Italian locations otherwise I would have fixated on the lackluster storytelling. Really nothing at stake to root for. Enzo Ferrari’s marriage is broken, his relationship with his mistress lacks passion, and there are so many drivers to keep track of that I never really care about anyone. The movie places its biggest bet on Enzo’s relationship with his bastard son but director Michael Mann never develops the boy’s character beyond fanboying for a cocky driver and a brief scene where he he’s not bored by his fathers explanation of fuel systems. Again, enjoyed the Italian scenery otherwise, eh.
A tough watch that may be triggering for some people. Felt longer than its 1:43 runtime largely due to the serious subject matter and stripped down storytelling (no music score, short scenes stacked on short scenes). Very realistic, but I didn’t buy the motivations of Jessica Chastain’s character. It did have me thinking afterward. What responsibilities do we owe our loved ones who require attention and support? The film features multiple scenarios including loving, harmful, misguided, and even transactional care. How might you act if in a similar situation?
