  This film looks beautiful and there’s plenty of poignant moments, but it never really lets you in on any of the rules of the magic world or establishes the stakes. In Spirited Away you know that if she doesn’t recognize her parents by a certain date, they’ll be stuck as pigs forever. It makes you care about the protagonists situation and tooth for them to resolve it. This movie is missing that piece that lets us know the consequences of the protagonist failing his quest so we can care about what’s at stake.
