This was a very interesting look into Miyazaki’s perspective on his legacy. As the granduncle couldn’t find a worthy and willing successor, neither could Miyazaki. I think this was his way of coming to terms with the fact that his time as a great filmmaker has come to an end and it’s okay for his work to end with him. I think this is something he’s struggled with for years considering his multiple retirements and rocky relationship with his wannabe-filmmaker…

The Tale of The Princess Kaguya 2013
Most gorgeous movie ever. Isao Takahata’ team’s use of line and color are truly exceptional. The intensity and cleanliness of the line increases with the intensity of Kaguya’s emotions. The same can be said for the colors which vary based on her emotions as well. Dark, desaturated tones appear at her lowest moments. Warm, saturated tones appear with her fear. Bright pastels surround her happiest moments. I have never seen such an effective use of animation. Many animated films could be the same wether or not they’re animated, but this film uses its medium to the fullest.
