Oftentimes when I’m catching up to a classic film, I find myself thinking that it’s nice when it feels like a film has been waiting for you to discover it.
For the first time, I’ve had what feels like the opposite reaction. I wish I’d seen this sooner; in my early 20’s to be precise. I loved it today, but I can imagine it would’ve struck me differently then. I would’ve shown it to dates as a test of how cool they were. I don't even go on dates anymore.

I was surprised to learn this is based on a book! There are so many of Bong Joon-Ho’s regular themes throughout that it felt like a mashup of much of his previous work (in a good way.)
The apocalyptic future, on a perpetually snowbound planet brings to mind Snowpiercer, while the designs of the creepers recall Okja crossed with rolly-pollies. And of course the class divide that runs through much of his work, from The Host to Parasite.

Has a lot of the hallmarks of the Great American Epic, but fails to actually be particularly great. Guy Pearce’s American accent felt flat to me, sounding like a comedian imitating an American, and not all like an Oscar worthy performance. He gets to yell a lot, though, and they love that too. I dug the score, and there’s some gorgeous photography. I appreciated the acknowledgment that rich white Americans have always exploited immigrants and blamed them for their problems.…
