Gahhhhh Ornette is the man! Clarke and Lachman do a great job packaging the jazz with such energy through camera movements and the edit. Some of the vignettes are excessive but it’s great to not have talking heads with such a free-wheeling subject.

What a depiction of life. Even though the setting of this film is far removed from the place I have had my own life experiences – the core themes of love, pain, success, curiosity, doubt and humour resonate profoundly. You can look past the middle class cosmetic layer to, what is, a masterpiece of character interaction in the social realism genre.

Hoop Dreams 1994
A monumental piece of film.
Forget about the hoops on the court, it’s the societal hoops that those in this film had to jump through that is most alarming. I’m sure the economic pressure in 2024 is as heightened as ever but I hope the psychological manipulation exhibited in this film is something that we have moved a long way from.
