Yes, Hal is great, and everything that is everything has been said about the visuals and use of the classical score. The ominous zoom-in on Hal when the astronauts thought he couldn't hear them was great and a highlight of the film - definitely the writing and editing peak. But other than that, Kubrick hides the story with surrealism not because he should, but because he can. It comes across as standoffish, and perhaps even arrogant.
