Apocalypse Now 1979
Dead bodies! Mutilated bodies! Bodies cut open! Vietnamese bodies! Cambodian bodies! More bodies! Bodies prostrated before the white American soldier!
Apocalypse Now doesn’t care about the Vietnamese, it cares about mourning some vague idea of American humanity and morality getting “ruined” in a war that was “for nothing”. Also why is Coppola so obsessed with savagery? In their flat savagery the Vietnamese are both the perfect mute victim and the perfect “primordial” force of brutality. Isn’t it just great that…

idk I feel like I’ve seen a lot of stories like this where a university education in literature seems to be the go to way out of an underprivileged life (or symbol for that escape). It’s somewhat tired and idealistic in an artificial way. But I talked to the directors after screening and what they said about masculinity & the mainstreaming of cartel culture in Mexico was very interesting. They also said learning to care about colonial history & Mexican political identity is almost a rite of passage for students in Mexican public universities; that was very provoking for me.
