  Cute but slightly mawkish, John Hughes' final directorial effort is a low-key affair that certainly has its heart in the right place. However, the simple plot and insular setting (I guess Mr. Hughes figured he had shown enough Chicago for one career?) make for a minor and slightly tired experience.

  Gorgeously filmed (in Technicolor) and exquisitely acted family drama, even when it borders on mawkishness, there's a power in the honest beauty of familial ties presented.
