Anora is a “fun”, self-aware, and thought-provoking piece of film. Mikey Madison masterfully spearheads this three act commentary on sexual intimacy, power, privilege, and love. I think it relies on these uncomfortably long moments to help the audience realize and perhaps confront their own perspectives, values, and biases, acting as a sort of mirror. I had pretty high expectations for this flick and it certainly delivered. I love scary movies that deal in religious sub-text or themes. Grant is at his disturbing best, while Thatcher and East deliver similarly excellent performances. Unlike some other recent thrillers, the script was quite good and the premise was familiar, yet unique/original. My only real complaints were that the plot pacing seemed to drag and there was almost a flattening of plot tension. Nevertheless, highly recommend!

Prior to watching Lady Bird, I thought it was overhyped, millennial-obsessed Oscar bait. I was astounded and surprised by its unique blend of charm and authenticity. It provides its audience with an endearing and humorous take on a teen and their family’s transition into young adulthood. It truly has something in it for all potential watchers and I highly recommend it as such.
