There’s a lot of talent on display from this director and the cast. Joan Chen is particularly great. The first 30 minutes are very funny and depict 2008 adolescence with subtle care. But it then becomes clear how grating the protagonist actually is and the fun starts to go away.
This character and his story just aren’t very compelling. He is constantly cruel to others and lacks personality. By the end, we don’t see him change much at all beyond…
This evoked so many memories of my childhood. Being a lonely kid with a lonely single mother. Observing each other’s failures and successes. Becoming connected to the strange characters in her life. Witnessing her vulnerability while relying on her protection. These are deep characters elevated by excellent performances. A beautiful film with a unique sense of humor.

I Saw the TV Glow is full of tragic character moments that feel so personal and painful to me. Yet, I struggle to leave its world when the credits roll. These characters feel so close. So warm.
The highlight for me is Maddy’s monologue in the planetarium. It’s an uncut recounting of off-screen events. It goes on forever. It shouldn’t work. But that’s the point. We will never get to see her experience. We can only listen. It’s up to…
