The animation is sublime, but the story is every VR Mary Sue cliché that could be squeezed into two hours. Underdefined, lackluster characters struggle to date one another in typical repressed high schooler style, while at the last minute there's a B-plot about abused children. If you've seen "Summer Wars" (2009), "Sword Art Online" (2012) and Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" -- you've seen every original idea this film has. Watch for the animation, but unplug your brain for the story.
