Twisting and contradictory and gut-wrenching. I’m most interested in how pivotal this film is for the art form as a whole. It has notably influenced Lynch and Altman, and on the other end, I find it very clear that Bergman was influenced by Vertov’s Man With A Movie Camera. I see this mainly in the projector montage at the outset of the film and the breaking of the fourth wall during Alma’s exit. As much as I regard this film highly as an independent piece, the way it serves as a bridge from Vertov to more contemporary experimentalists excites me even more.

Blue Velvet 1986
Masterwork of dialogue, visual intrigue and symbolism, acting, story. Horribly funny, impeccable timing. My favorite moment, which perfectly summarizes the strange nature of the story, is when the blonde dances on the hood of the car to In Dreams. The world keeps on turning, for better or worse.

It was pretty good! Not great, not exactly groundbreaking or surprising, but pretty good!
