Slightly baffled at the decision to market this as a horror film, but otherwise this was fine. Ashley Judd & Michael Shannon's performances and the set design are all that really kept me involved, the last half hour or so is absurd enough to slightly make up for the sluggish and aimless prior 70-something minutes beforehand i guess. Didn't hate this but i can't say I really wanna watch it again either

Pretty well paced and occasionally hilarious, but a majority of the jokes feel pretty samey and land with a whimper rather than a bang. It's overall fine but outside of some decent gags it's not much more than a painless short watch

This is what cinema was made for: fucking around with your friends and playing alien invasion in your backyard and some guy's house until the government steps in impressed with your work so far and gives you a bunch more money which allows you to have even more gore.
(Jokes aside this is incredibly fun and extremely impressive for Jackson's film debut, i especially liked the cinematography and the sense of friendship between the leads not to mention the crazy gore effects in the last third. Not my favorite of Jackson's low budget trilogy but a great film nonetheless)

Honestly just get the soundtrack album instead: the music kicks every kind of ass known to man and then some, hence the 2.5, and Morris Day's performance is entertaining (allegedly he was drunk frequently during filming and you can tell), but the melodrama is dull and not terribly interesting, the lead character sucks, and Prince is noticeably uncomfortable in an acting role leading to a flat and uninterested performance.
