Lights in the Dusk 2006
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
rough around the edges but interesting relationship between the kiosk owner and the main character (friends? siblings? two people who survived romantic love?). richer than other of his dramas because of this and some other narrative subtleties (the unseen fight; no overtly happy ending; the dog and the child). As I am wrapping kaurismaki’s movies up, i think i’ll crawl up this vein of subtleness into the movies of bresson, who no doubt inspired this flick, the match factory girl, and other of aki’s works.

A Man Escaped 1956
great film, makes me want to rewatch le circle rouge. both movies really play with the suspense between 'the plan' and its execution, supporting that tension with displays of skills and competency from characters under duress. a testament to the fact that a action movies do not have to feature bombastic spectacle but can find their intensity in thoughtfulness /modesty / necessity.
I'd be curious to see a cut without the voice-over narration though.
