In the film, the three main characters are letting their histories define themselves, and because of this they can’t move forward—they’re being held over from realizing their own potential, and they’re letting others define their lives instead of living it for themselves. This movie should have taken its own message to heart: leave the glory days to the past; you cannot recapture them no matter how much you want to.
