This film, overall, does multiple things really well. I could talk about the retrospective narration from the girl, or the mood of 1960s Chicago, achieved with whatever film stock they used. But it was Tom Hardy, man was his air electric! Moving like a true mob boss, his words landing with timely precision, as if channeling Vito Corleone himself. And Austin Butler, he was simply built for this moment. The role seems natural, obvious for him. You couldn’t make up a better role for him, maybe WWll pilot, …oh wait never mind.
