I can be shallow, sometimes. I gave this such a high rating simply because I love the aesthetic and the overall vibe. The cinematography, the costuming, the hair and makeup, the score, the ATMOSPHERE. The sound of Kristen Stewart’s stilettos (yes, Kristen Stewart; that was not Diana) clicking-clacking on stone steps. Those gorgeous, iridescent pearls. A visual and aural feast. Thematically and narratively it wasn’t very good. The dialogue was truly embarrassing at times. Brave and committed though it was, Kristen…
I saw this movie very shortly after watching The Brutalist, and so I could not help but think about that far greater, much better movie throughout the runtime of this one. I don’t know how to describe it other than this: The Brutalist represents everything I want to be, in spite of its flaws and the flaws of its characters. The Room Next Door represents everything I do NOT want to be, in spite of its (few and far between) virtues. That’s all I’ve got.
