I don’t quite understand why I didn’t connect with this film the first time I watched it. This is my second watch and I found myself utterly captivated. So much so that, when the film ended, I felt as though I had awoken from a dream state. Such effective storytelling. Beautiful, classic cinema.

    Andrei Rublev

Andrei Rublev (1972) is a contemplative 3hrs of film packed with substantive religious commentary. However, its narrative did very little to captivate my attention. In that way, this film was a test of endurance for me. But it was almost worth it for the film’s colorful, oddly cathartic conclusion.

For anyone seeking substantive religious commentary that is also engaging cinema, I’d recommend Happy as Lazzaro (2018).

During his search, Mahito happens upon the tower master, a wise old man responsible for the daily equilibrium of the sub-earthly world. The Tower Master is a strong vehicle to explore themes like balance, acceptance, and transience.

This semester, I was bestowed the distinct opportunity to watch Nicholas Roth’s directorial debut—Hanky Panky (2023). Hanky Panky (2023) follows anxious protagonist Sam and his sentient handkerchief Woody. Sam is, by mistake, invited to a getaway in remote Utah. There, he befriends an odd bunch of barely related people. Behind the mingling, however, a malevolent force brews a cultist plot.

Hanky Panky (2023) is a self-aware exhibition of low-budget filmmaking. The film attempts to do, with limited resources, what Sam…
