More interesting than the critique of capitalism, which has been explored in other Bong Joon Ho movies, is the question of what constitutes a human being’s soul. Are our memories the essence of who we are? Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 had polar interpretations of the exact same memories. Different ideas about who to blame…and who deserved retribution. One was cowered by a world where everyone has “money problems” and the other sought to extinguish the perpetrators of that world.
