The contrast between Zé Pequeno and Benny on how they approach running life in the favela, the moral ambiguity throughout the film (highlighted, for example, by the period of relative peace and security in the favela for much of Zé Pequeno's reign), and the depiction of a never-ending spiral of self-fulfilling violence and revenge—it's just a phenomenal film.
