So much better than Dogtooth in every way. My main problem with that movie is that it blows its load in the first 10 minutes and all of its disturbing content happens so early on that the rest of the movie doesn’t really get more shocking - like how the fuck am I supposed to be creeped out by an incest scene if it’s already happened 10 times? Dancer in the Dark is possibly the most emotionally effective film I've ever seen. Every minute is hard to watch, especially in the final third, and that was just as true on my second viewing; if anything, knowing what was going to happen next made me scared to move onto the oncoming scene, as there are some moments here that are burnt into my brain and are seriously painful to get through, no matter how many times I've seen them.…
From the very first shot, the nightmarish tone here is perfectly showcased through the cinematography alone. It's honestly sad that Elem Klimov hasn't made anything of note other than this movie, because his direction here is just phenomenal.
