this is one of those adaptations where I kinda just gotta set aside what I'm bummed the movie didn't do, and appreciate what the movie did. Is Keanu Reeves who I think of when I hear "John Constantine"? No. Definitely not. He's not very slutty, he's not very witty, he's not very punk rock- bloody hell, he's not even British!
What Keanu does provide, though, once I set aside my biases, is a good, well-rounded protagonist who fits the world.…

standout performances from David Oyelowo and Oprah Winfrey. Solid performance from Forest Whitaker, too, although I wish there was more to it, from time to time. For a protagonist, it often felt he didn't have as much to do, weirdly.
Still, the film's deeply emotional and well-constructed, and there were a lot of historical nods and eastereggs I caught and appreciated.
Two other things I felt could've been improved upon:

Speaking as a gaunt-faced, big-nosed woman who struggles with acne problems, I would prefer an adaptation that goes all-out with de-demonizing all aspects of the classic Wicked Witch character. With that being said, Cynthia Erivo is really talented and does a great job as Elphaba.
Jeff Goldblum sucked.
