I grew up in the era when anime was most often procured via bootlegged VHS tapes or rented from the video store of the moment (Hollywood Video, Blockbuster, Movie Gallery, take your pick) and slapped with a “not for kids” sticker.
In those days I was an avid watcher of it, but have fallen off in recent years. However, Kotaro Lives Alone reminded me why I liked the medium and the art form.
What appears to be a slice-of-life story…
Panos’s style of filmmaking and the writing he is drawn and contributes to is not for everyone. However, if you enjoyed Beyond the Black Rainbow and Mandy, then this is another incredible entry in his weird “retro-futuristic” visual style and offbeat method of storytelling.
What does it all mean? Who the hell knows, but it all kind of rules.
