Sprawling and chaotic, but not without its charm. If it had been a tad shorter, it would have been the perfect popcorn muncher. I didn’t enjoy the meandering direction it took, and the villains were a bit on the nose. I think I felt a bit insulted by the shallow pool we were wading in the whole time.
That said, the creatures were perfect. Robert Pattinson’s performance was top tier, as were many of his costars. I enjoyed the tone shifting and there were some genuinely hilarious moments. Ultimately a standard fare good piece of film.
As a pregame, we watched the Q&A that Kevin Smith gave in which he answered a question about Superman Lives, and winds up telling this absolutely bonkers story about Barbara Streisand's hairdresser. I would say that's required reading before watching this beast of a movie.
Sonnenfeld's direction seems pitch perfect for the style of the times, and I'm just delighted by his film credits. Same goes for Brent Maddock, one of the four screenwriters, who has credits all over the Tremors franchise.
A lot of the gags are outdated and dimwitted, but the giant spider kicks ass. Thanks, Jon Peters.
Of all four WICK movies, this one must be a standout. Not only does it deliver on the question that's been gnawing at our protagonist ("...and then what?"), but it does so in the most sincere way. John Wick must pay for his crimes against the High Table (whoever they might be), but he is heeding to a moral structure much larger than the bloated mythology of the franchise and gives not one iota about some rich asshole with a…
