  A fairly straightforward, but instantly hard-hitting exposé on the exploitative industry surrounding addiction treatment. I was struck by its frank honesty, shared through interviews with victims and perpetrators alike. For lack of a better word, it's yet another sobering example at how healthcare in America is merely a tool for profit.

  A human interest story without a compelling human subject or interesting story to tell. The central character - a filmmaker/landlord/used car salesman - drunkenly purchases an ambulance with his boss' money and this film proceeds to follow his rather unexciting life of DIY filmmaking and car sales. I could chalk up to this just being "not for me", but I fail to see why anyone would think his person warrants a documentary profile.

  Wasn't entirely sold on the supernatural elements of this otherwise compelling immigrant tale. Still, it's a promising first feature that utilizes its cultural influences distinctively and effectively. Special kudos to the sound design team.

  Oliver Hermanus' 'Ikiru' remake is old-fashioned storytelling done right. Elegantly crafted with lovely performances from Nighy and the supporting cast. Its critique of the zombiefying bureaucracy of working in the public sector particularly resonated with me.

Following
