A personal favorite. For some reason this movie feels like it’s 3.5 hours instead of 2.5, because of its pacing, but McQueen is in top form, and this movie is a fine alternative to the more popular The Great Escape. Early Hoffman as a duplicitous conman is worthy of the watch alone, but it’s McQueen’s portrayal of Charriere and the ultimate test of not breaking a man’s will that carries this movie to the finish line.
Jodorowsky opened my eyes to one of the most trippy, surrealistic movies I’ve ever watched (admittedly, I watched this movie at an impressionable time in my early 20’s). The progression and transformation that this movie delves into, and ultimately questions (like our quest for truth, the fountain of youth, and the meaning of life) is nothing short of perfection.
