I learned that when filming began, Stimson walked into my favorite bar and declared "This is the bar where I'll be hanging a tab." And he did. It's always fun recognizing filming locations, and the energy at the Garland was peak. Journey to the Center of the Earth 1959
The half star is for Gertrude. Her honest performance adds a sense of naturalism to the chaotic. This is needed, as it allows the audience to reconnect with a (pardon the pun) down to earth character as a respite from the ludicrous. The suspension of disbelief required to invest in a surrealistic and nonsensical premise would be difficult to maintain without Gertrude providing this tether to the mundane, and the film would simply descend into silliness. Rather, Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) remains an imaginative tale of exploration that despite some dated effects, captivates.
