I feel like only Robert Eggers could create such a believable but atmospheric blend of reality and folklore while having it be so visually stunning throughout. i found myself wishing the pacing was a little bit snappier and i did miss some aspects of the original story, but overall i loved this adaptation and it made me view some of the dynamics through a new lens.
also Willem Dafoe as an eccentric cat lover/keeper of the secrets was a treat,…
i enjoyed this film so much more than i originally expected - it was masterful and reminded me a lot of Hitchcock’s Vertigo in its use of colour, attention to detail and foreshadowing.
also the acting and costuming was insane and Helen Mirren was on some real queen shit the whole time it was truly amazing.
some nice visuals and interesting thoughts in here but i wish it had picked a lane between cat and mouse horror and theological/philosophical questioning and leaned into it more because it didn’t quite hit the mark in either of those categories for me to be really blown away.
overall not a bad movie though and Hugh Grant sings radiohead and does a jar jar binks impression so bonus points for that
