A visually stunning film, full of inventive machine and character designs that bring its worlds mix of past and future to life. While the occasional CGI effects can be distracting, the film largely succeeds in delivering a captivating aesthetic. Although Jim Hawkins' portrayal leans heavily into brooding teenage angst, the compelling voice performance of John Silver adds depth and warmth. A risky and mostly successful reimagining of a classic tale, that feels far removed from the usual Disney animated fare.
The dead man walking through a Marrakech market place is just one of many fantastic sequences, all beautifully framed, that make me love this suspense masterpiece. One of my favourite Hitchcock s, along with North by Northwest.
