While there was a rather surprising lack of strenuous objection to the threatened incestuous marriage, it is a gorgeous movie. The music got a little repetitive. But I stayed awake for a surreal French movie after a long day at work, because I was invested in Donkey Skin avoiding marriage to her father. The movie is not even close to being as disturbing as Serge Ginsburg and the video with his daughter.
As a child, I detested the Baroness (an actress nominated for 3 Oscars!) for driving Maria away. But now I realize the Baroness was truly treated shabbily. Von Trapp refers to her as his “savior” who brought meaning back to his life, and he clearly brought her to his estate with the intent of proposing. A compelling work based on true events that are sometimes fictionalized to enhance the narrative. I’d be interested in a documentary on this. If only we’d had cell phones in the 70’s to warn about guys giving weird vibes.
Enjoyable to watch while tidying up, entering my time for work, putting up the Christmas tree (not decorating yet), and vacation planning. Appreciated the Pretty Woman homage via the female gaze.
