  Flat and predictably directed, with one or two truly embarrassing visual decisions. But very well shot.

  The performances carry this, with Hugh Grant tap-dancing all over this thing. The whole thing falls apart in the second act when it decays into a gory riff on prestige, but very fun when it's working.

  Equal parts a loving tribute to the 1971 classic - and a full throated Hideaki Anno action drama. Big stakes, complicated emotions, and kinetic visuals that (typically) end in tragedy.

  Fits nicely into Anno's "Shin" oeuvre- exploring the hubris of man and the suffering of misunderstanding that follows.

  I'll need to revisit this review after a home viewing - with a better sound mix (thanks Fathom Events) and without the distraction of enthusiastic fans (no fault of their own, blame it on a single showing for most states)
