    Longlegs

    ★★

Is it scary being a lady FBI Agent?

I love that a very prominent image of Bill Clinton presides over the goings on of this movie.

Do not be fooled. The Silence of the Lambs and True Detective, this is not. I was, and probably set my sights too high for this.

Oz Perkins is obviously a master of atmosphere, on full display here — but, aside from that, Longlegs isn’t bringing much to the table. And I just wanted more.

  • Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1

    ★½

There are bits that are good, a couple moments that are great, and a whole lot of not much in between. I love the idea of this saga and the release schedule, and understand to judge Chapter 1 in isolation isn’t quite fair, but you just can’t have a 3 hour movie that basically does nothing but introduce characters for the full runtime. And I venture to guess most viewers won’t be able to recall the names of more than two of those characters.

It may get better, but this itself is not a great movie.

This movie made me appreciate how subtle and understated mother! is. It’s an interesting idea better suited as a okayish Twilight Zone episode.

Adding to the muck, the creators found it necessary to make most of the characters aggressively stupid and bigoted, to the point that they become caricatures better portrayed on SNL. We get it... racists are bad.

Only a site as wonderful as Netflix can give us the chance to make a double feature of Roma and this steaming crap pile. I truly have no idea why I watched this. One star because, despite the flaws, it does have a semi-coherent storyline.

  • Hot Fuzz

    Hot Fuzz

    ★★★★★

Quite possibly a perfect movie. Edgar Wright is clearly a student of film genres, demonstrating his knowledge with every film he releases. In the case of Hot Fuzz, Wright combines notable tropes of police procedural, buddy cop and even slasher films, neatly binding together them with comedy without falling into the narrowing line of parody.

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are always an enjoyable pair. Their chemistry throughout the Three Flavours Trilogy helps make the films unique. Though Fuzz is definitely his best, Wright is a filmmaker who has made no true missteps, with a young filmography full of hits.
