georges bataille posited that economic ideas about scarcity fail to recognize the excess a modern economy produces beyond subsistence - which are expanded in non productive ways, like sacrificing one cat to be saved, or creating spectacles of luxury of cgi-generated cats. though bataille's theory helps us understand the waste societies produce, it is also tragic that the hundred million dollars spent on this film, plus the fewer than a hundred million dollars revenue, could have been spent on solving poverty, building resilience against climate change, or even just giving it to me. any of those uses are better than this
