For whatever reason, Portland's independent theaters passed on this nominated film, and I had to scramble to see it. The wait was worth it, as it left me with that good-movie feeling despite it's grim subject, probably due to the first person perspective. I didn't have to witness the torture.

I agree that (as much as I'm always excited to see him) casting Daveed Diggs in a role probably ruined the twist for the people who hadn't read the book.

Quality filmmaking! It's not going to win Best Picture, but it sure would be nice if it did.

When shorts are packaged together, and because I don't read up beforehand, I am more likely to have to break my rules about what movies I don't watch. This broke the rule of no animals in peril. It was horrifying, and a very grim end to a very meh slate of live action shorts.

(And I really hated the animated shorts, which I had watched earlier in the day. Not my favorite day at the movies.)

I knew from the trailer this was going to be a movie I would love as it included striking colors, an engaging main character, and a moment that made me laugh out loud. The movie delivered, with a gentle humor that kept going throughout.* The physical comedy** was a treat, as was Fiona Gordon's French accent that was so bad even I winced, and I look forward to other movies by Abel & Gordon.

With a subject as engaging as Aubrey Gordon, the work is half done.
