  So fascinating and well done. The restoration of these old films was brilliant, so that the subjects go from looking like silly Charlie Chaplin-like cartoon figures to real, living, breathing young men in a hellish war. Sobering and heart-wrenching. If you see it at the theater, stay for the director's commentary after the credits for the interesting story of the process of the restoration .

  I want to say right off the bat that I didn't know before watching that this was based on the director's real family experience growing up. That might have made it more interesting to me. But while there were some beautiful poignant moments, I found it to be overall depressing, boring, and weird. What's with the guy in the bogeyman outfit singing an entire song directly to the camera?  A zoom in on a broken glass on the ground? To…
