  Unknowingly embarked on an odyssey uncovering complicated father-daughter relationships double featuring this with Schrader’s Hardcore (1979). What both movies reveal well, particularly Erice’s El Sur, is that our upbringing shapes us in ways that we lose sight of over time. Generational trauma is then passed on to our offspring even at our best attempts to prevent it. Familial trauma, a familiar trope, is more poignant in this film due to its delicate staging and delivery.
