Expert cinematography, exceptionally strong writing with clean flow between moods and an effective up-plateau-up narrative arc with a satisfying release of tension at the end of the movie. Strong acting from all characters but particularly from Cruise, his love interest, Cruise's boss and the arrogant student. The auxilliary characters anchor the plot in all its dimensions really well.

The flow between moods is poor. The female lead's character arc doesn't make sense. Several elements in the plot, such as the male lead's headaches and the bullfight, seem to be introduced solely to complicate the action. This is great when done wl but unfortunately these devices are quite jarring here. Cinematography is not bad but not good.

This film is very good. The directors effectively manage the audience's mood at feverous tension throughout almost all of the film, only pausing to shortly amplify the tension again. It is visually attractive and sometimes stunning, with the opal motif being a standout. The trappings of Howard's upper-middle lifestyle are also on pleasant display.

Equilibrium is a good twist on the 'thought police' dystopia. It is well acted and cleverly directed, though the writing leaves a bit to be desired. The flow is also uneven. The narrative gets going quickly, stalls in the middle, but is revived in the last third of the film. I found this non-linear progression of tension difficult to engage with. I liked the use of those hyperbolic, fast-paced, loud and almost machine-like action sequences.
